Moleface Molly and Bigfoot

“I thought you were my friend, Carla Brown. But you’re just like the rest!” Molly screamed into Carla’s face. “Now you stay away from me!!”

“B-b-but,” Carla stammered. What could she say? She had laughed, but it wasn’t for the reason Molly thought it was.

“I don’t want to hear it,” Molly screamed again.
Carla sank into her chair and buried her face in her arms.

Carla hadn’t laughed at Molly. She had laughed at the funny way Zachary and Jake looked when they pretended to be moles. If only Molly hadn’t walked by just then.

“I shouldn’t have laughed at all,” Carla whispered. Zachary was always calling people names. But to call her Moleface Molly was the worst yet. She couldn’t help it if she had a big brown mole on her chin. Zachary had feet the size of the Titanic but nobody teased him.

“Everyone please be seated,” Mrs. Lopez announced, “so I can take lunch money.”

Carla wiped her tears away. When her row number was called she trudged forward and gave Mrs. Lopez her money. As she turned to go back to her desk Molly made a face at her.

She buried her face in her arms again and thought about Molly’s first day at school. Zachary had called her “Ostrich Hair” and Carla had threatened to tell Mrs. Lopez. From that time on they were friends.

It was true. Molly always had her head buried in a book, like a mole in the ground. But she was the best student in fourth grade. And she was always there for Carla no matter what.

Now, Molly wouldn’t even let her explain. “God, please help me get things right with Molly,” Carla prayed.

At lunch time Carla trudged into the cafeteria and sat down by herself. She had just pulled the sandwich out of her lunch box when she heard a loud crash. She turned toward the noise.

Down the isle between tables lay Zachary, face down in spilled milk and spaghetti. Jake was standing over him. “You tripped over your own feet?” he shouted.

Zachary raised himself out of the mess and sputtered, “Sorry.”

“Sorry ain’t good enough!” Jake was in Zachary’s face. “You ruined my lunch!” He turned to the crowd that had gathered. “Hey everybody, meet Bigfoot.”

Before she realized it, Carla was in Jake’s face. “You stop it, Jake,” she shouted, “or I’ll tell Mrs. Lopez. Everybody has a right to come to this school without being bullied.” She turned to Zachary. “Now you know how Molly feels when you call her Moleface.”

Just then Mrs. Lopez arrived. “Jake, get another tray,” she ordered as she wiped the food off Zachary. “The rest of you be seated.”
Carla turned and bumped right into Molly. Her friend was smiling. “Nice going, Carla. Come have lunch with me.”

“Molly,” Zachary called.

Molly turned.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “May I sit with you and Carla?”

Molly hesitated a minute, then smiled. “Sure, if you don’t mind eating lunch with a mole.

To Think About: What made Molly change her mind and forgive Carla for laughing at her?

To Remember: “Speak evil of no one.” Titus 3:2 NKJV

To Think About: What was Zachary’s punishment for being a bully to Molly?

To Remember: “Whatever you want men to do to you, do also to them.” Matthew 7:12 NKJV

To Pray: Dear God, Help me to never speak evil of anyone no matter how bad they are. And help me remember that the way I treat others will be the way others treat me.
