Devotion:

I Am Salt, I Am Light  ( Cont’d)

To Read: 1 John 1:3-7; Acts 13:47

Trina opened the car door and forced her legs to carry her across the grass. The class was already eating their lunch.

“Hello, Trina,” Mrs. Logan called. “Someone said you’d not be here, but I knew you would. Come help yourself to some fried chicken.”

Trina eased into the food line, filled her plate and looked around for a place to sit. That was when she saw Brad for the first time.

He was sitting on the bank of the nearby creek. He’d already filled his plate but instead of eating he was throwing bits of food to a duck. The duck was gobbling them up as soon as they hit the water.

She remembered her grandmother’s words. “Someone there might be lonely, too.” So she  eased over to sit beside him. “Do you mind if I sit here?” she asked.

He shook his head no and kept tossing the crumbs.

“I wasn’t coming today because I hardly know anyone here.” she said.  “And I was missing my friends back home.” Then she told him the story of the old salt shaker and how she had changed her mind.

“Mom and I just moved here to live with my grandma, too.” He smiled and took a bite of chicken. “My parents are getting a divorce, and my grandma insisted I come today so I wouldn’t have to think about it for awhile.”

“You could be just the one they need,” Grandma had said. Trina felt all sunny and warm inside. Being salt and light was neat.

To Think About: Are you kind to those who are hurting? Do you listen when others talk about their hurts? Do you pray for those who are hurting? Do you try to imitate Jesus when you are around others? These are some of the ways we can be lights to show what Jesus is really like. Then others will want to know Him too.

To Remember: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:17 (NKJV)

To Pray: Dear God, Sometimes I forget to be kind to people who are hurting. Sometimes I do all the talking instead of listening. And sometimes I forget to pray for others. Please help me to remember. Amen
