Devotion:

I Am Salt, I Am Light (1 of 2)

To Read: Matthew 5:13-16; Mark 9:50

“Are you sure you’d rather help me clean the attic instead of going to the picnic?” Grandma asked Trina. “I can do it by myself.”

Trina trudged up the stairs. “I don’t know any of the kids in my class. I wished we’d never moved. I’m so lonely without my old friends.”

“But you can make new friends,” Grandma said. “There may be someone else at the party who is lonely too. You could be just the one they need.”

“I’d rather stay here with you,” she insisted.

“Very well,” Grandma said. “Pull that box out of the corner and lay everything on the floor. I want to see what’s there.”

Trina sat on the floor and laid the items around her. Suddenly she cried, “ O-o-o-o, look at this neat old salt shaker.” She held up a large owl shaped shaker.

Grandma came to see, “I declare, I always wondered what happened to that old shaker.”

“It still has salt in it,” Trina cried. “I wonder if it’s still salty?”

Grandma replied, “Even if it is it hasn’t done any good sitting up here in the attic.”

Trina studied the shaker a moment, then said. “Most food wouldn’t taste very good without salt, would it, Grandma.”

“Indeed not,” Grandma said. “Salt flavors. Which reminds me of something. Jesus said we are the salt of the earth. Salty Christians are what adds flavor to the lives of others. But they  must get out of the shaker and become involved with people to make a difference.”

Trina bowed her head. “Like me.” she said. “I need to be spending time with my class instead of sitting here in the dark like this old shaker.”

“Jesus also said we are the light of the world.” Grandma added. “Our good works, or salty deeds, are the light that makes others want to know Him.”

Trina jumped up. “I wonder if it’s too late to ask Dad to take me to the picnic?”

To Think About: How about you? Do you spend time with others so you can learn about their needs? Do you use that time to do good deeds for them? Jesus said we are the salt of the earth. Salt flavors, salt heals and salt preserves.

To Remember: “You are the salt of the earth ; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned” It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.” Matthew 5:13 (NKJV)

To Pray: Dear God, My kind deeds make people’s lives happier and helps heal hurts, just like salt. Help me to always do kind things for other people. Amen
